I love the practical side of Shawn Achor’s message.
Basically he is saying that our behavior matters and therefore having good happiness
hygiene manifests a joyous spirit. This is inner joy that lights the world not
only for you but for those who surround you.
Oprah talked about thinking about happiness as a muscle that
must be flexed in order to create health much like a spiritual muscle.
Shawn did admit that it is easier for some people to be
happier than others although we all have a happy baseline and this baseline can
be improved. He also explained that it isn’t normal to be happy all of the
time; to be human is to be sympathetic and compassionate to suffering. Hardship
is part of life but if we let this consume us it will drain us of happiness and
therefore with practice one can overcome the valleys in life.
He also confirmed that a smile actually does change the
chemistry in the brain regardless if it is forced or not. Give it a try.
