Cultivate Positivity in Your Life

Kathryn J. Raths, LLC photo- Cat Collage I drew with oil pastels; my creative spirit helps me to cultivate positivity.

The blog post, blog.bufferapp.com, discusses how most decisions are based on the subconscious mind. Our conscious mind is only the tip of the iceberg, representing a small percentage of our full mind, 12% conscious and 88% subconscious. It also states that negative words are often not recognized by the subconscious. For example, if you are trying to quit a bad habit like eating sweets, you might say, “I’m not going to eat sweets,” but the subconscious doesn’t hear “no or not” and instead embraces the message, “I’m going to eat sweets,” and suddenly you are craving them. Instead of saying what you will not do, frame your intention with your positive focus on change. You might instead say, “I’m going to eat healthy foods like fruit and vegetables to improve my nutrition and, therefore, my health.” This sends a message that aligns your conscious and subconscious mind.

It is tough to replace negative thinking and negative words, but the more we can practice, the more positive we will become. It is a work in progress, like most anything we try to alter. It takes time. Remember, self-awareness is necessary first to determine what our reality reflects, and then we must identify our triggers by determining what is causing the negativity. It is possible to change this behavior. If we continue to tell ourselves we are worth the work, we will see our perspectives changing into glass-half-full thinking instead of half-empty.

I used to be a person who worried and stressed a lot. I saw the world through unhappy, fearful eyes, which caused me a lot of hardship. Once I realized the power of my mind, I worked to control my thinking by redirecting it, and this was a variable that empowered much change in my life. Positive thoughts rule my thinking today, inspiring and motivating me to continue pushing forward. I do have glimpses of negativity, but when it happens, I recognize it quickly and is short-lived.

If you want a healthier life, start by changing your mindset. You can overcome it with practice, and the shift in thinking will manifest greatness beyond your wildest imagination!

The good life, continued...

I am currently in a Case Conceptualization class in my Mental Health Counseling program, which requires us to learn about the different schools of thought. I am a fan of Carl Rogers and his person-centered approach. It doesn’t involve a lot of tools and it is based on authenticity and the belief in human goodness. In this theory it is not about the counselor agreeing with the client because this is not recommended but it is more about the counselor playing a role in the experience of the client; in the sidelines but offering empowering questioning (in a sense more navigational subtle guidance) that enables self-discovery. The premise acknowledges that life comes with problems and sometimes people do make bad choices but through nonjudgmental support and a nurturing environment we can come to accept accountability and learn from our mistakes.  A lot of the discussion focuses on what is right in a person’s life to help reframe a negative mindset to a more positive one in order to manifest a trend of health or the good life.

I love the quote I used by Carl in the article, the good life isn’t a destination, it is a process or trending realm instead of what we most think about it being, more of a destination.

Are you living the good life? Can you answer the questions posed in the article? What are your thoughts about Person-centered therapy? Does it sound like something you think might be helpful to you? I’m curious!

About 1 year ago I had a dream where I was picking up leaves and selling them. It sounds crazy but I know this dream is somehow significant to my life. Perhaps I'm finally finding value/ learning lessons from my past and by selling the leaves, I'm letting it go.

I've always had a connection to trees, they awe me. Currently, I'm working on a black and white pencil drawing of a tree and I recently finished a collage of a tree that reflects many cut up photos in a vision board perspective. It is my goal to have a gallery showing of trees I've created. They are both powerful, serene.

The article is philosophical. It represents a visual supporting the power of thoughts and supportive action. I'm hopeful the concept offers a new, different but positive perspective.

What did you think?

The best thing you can gift yourself is self belief. It is the true foundation to your success in the world. Your thoughts echo into your life and if you are presenting fear, anxiety and lack of worth, it is likely you are suffering in your life. Heal this pain by changing the way that you look at you. Force yourself to find value in your existence because you are here for a reason. The miracle of you, regardless of how you feel, is worth celebrating. Take care of this treasure. Be proud of the life you lead, it is truly rich because you are in it. BELIEVE this and you will find life will be much easier to navigate.

Leave me a note about your value, I'm interested!

I really never get tired of talking about positive thinking. I believe that the emotions and words you put into your world actually create a mirror image of the same. Of course we always worry and it is tough to overcome this but if you can distract yourself with inspiration, it really does help you stay on track. Anxiety and fear, when it rules your life, is extremely toxic. It fuels more of the same. To overcome it, you have to embrace the vulnerability of your situation and push forward gambling you will conquer all. Sometimes you do and sometimes you don't but I can guaranty if you don't succeed, you will learn from the experience. Sometimes we have to figure out what not to do first but perseverance and mindset does set the stage for your outcome. Of course you have to follow through with action that fits into your vision.

I find, for me, a written agenda helps me to keep pushing. I have a long-term goal with detailed items described. For example, I want to pay off my home with a book contract. I believe this is possible. Now, keep in mind, I've only self-published a book at this point. It is a start on my publishing journey. I interview many published authors and I love that I'm able to do this. It keeps my mind on target as I learn from all of these individuals. I'm excited about this and I can't wait to check it off of my list someday!

Share a dream of yours with me, how are you moving towards it?
