My blog, Inspirations by Kathryn J. Raths includes posts from 2009 to 2016 that were an extension of my Healthy Living Examiner column which has been closed. However, the articles are being revamped as an extension of Kathryn J. Raths.com, which is in the making! The image is a self-portrait I drew in oil pastels; the woods gift me a deep connection with nature and safety!

I have never detoxed in my life prior to this month. Sure I've cut sugar out for a time or red meat but I haven't overhauled my system, which this program claims to do. Today, I weigh 169 pounds. I seem to go up and down a few pounds but sticking close to this number normally. At my best weight, after crazy dieting, I was 156 pounds at one point last year. My peak weight, 183 pounds.
I've been sharing my health journey along the way in hopes to get feedback, pointers and inspire others with any success.
I have been working out every single day (averaging 1 hour) for over the past 3 plus months. This is working for me. Unfortunately, I'm still not satisfied with my diet. Yes, it has improved significantly but I'm still feeling like I have digestion problems (bloating at the top of my stomach) and since Dr. Junger's plan seems to focus on this area, it is the next challenge I'm embracing.
I believe this will overhaul my diet, allow me to drop a few pounds in a healthy way and gift me with some benefits of healthy digestion. Once I'm done, I'll report my results.
Wish me luck!

Source of influence, continued...
Click on the below article link to obtain background
information to this blog post:
As of late, I’ve been studying influence and things that
shape us, in my Lifespan Psychology class.
We had to write a paper that discussed what, from our childhood, has
shaped us today. Below is an insert from my paper:
“As a young adult, I had to recognize and own my temper in order
to manage it and avoid repeating the aggressive nature my father displayed most
evenings when he came home drunk. Because my dad picked inappropriate fights
with my mom almost daily and she coped with this, subconsciously, I absorbed
this type of bullying tactic. Although I
never stuck my ex-husband, I was verbally abusive (as was he) and I threw
things, like my father did, when we argued.
I inadvertently tainted the balance of our partnership in an effort to
make sure I was not viewed as submissive.
I also, unknowingly, chose an alcoholic partner. I was able to take ownership of my negative
behavior, dig into its origin and positively change my negative actions before
I had my children. I realized also that I had to stop enabling my husband’s
drinking problem and therefore after his refusal of treatment, we divorced.
I was fortunate that my father actually found religion while I was
in middle school. He replaced his
drinking addiction with God and this, in turn, gifted our family with a
healthier environment from that point forward.
Although I rebelled with drugs and alcohol during my early adolescent
years, I matured quickly and reached for a brighter future.”
I think about the affect of these years and, if I wouldn’t
have gotten a handle on my temper or I had got lost and stuck in this
“partying” crowd, my world would be dark today. I’m grateful for my path, it
has taught (and continues to teach) me critical life lessons. I’m hopeful, by
sharing what I learn and my experiences, I can inspire someone else to move
through the darkness and to step into the light!

Susanne Alexander-Heaton continued the interview.
She talked about her writing experience, “I never
in a million years would have thought the word author and my name would appear
on the same line. My book was inspired and dedicated to my friend’s
12-year-old daughter, Sarah, who passed away from a very rare brain
tumor. Sarah came to me in a dream the night after she passed away. She
was back to her giggly, mischievous old self and twirling around in a meadow
filled with wildflowers and she said to me, ‘Susanne, I have faery wings instead
of angel wings, because faery wings are so much easier to run and play around
in.’ This dream forever changed my destiny.”
She continued, “I started to research everything that I
could about faeries and I found out two things: 1. They are considered
nature’s angels and 2. They are a wee bit mischievous! A few years
later, while on a sea-kayaking trip totally immersed in nature, the whole idea
for the book came streaming in. I literally could not write the ideas down
quick enough. I had the initial draft of the book ½ written during the
10-day trip. I returned back to Calgary totally dumbfounded by the entire
experience."
Susanne discussed her exhaustion, “At that time, I was also
working in my corporate job. Management changed and I ended up doing two
jobs, which resulted in my burnout in June 2008. I ended up needing to
take a leave of absence for my health. During that time, my father who had
been suffering from chronic leukemia was continually getting worse and the doctors
could not determine why. The bottom line was that they had missed a
six-inch cancerous tumor on his liver and he was given only three months to
live. During this time we had some heart to heart conversations. At one
point he looked at me and said, ‘Susanne, get yourself out of that corporate
job, and go and focus on your book.’ If you had known my father, you would
realize just how shocking it was to hear him say these words. He had
always been so proud of my accomplishments and believed in giving everything
you could to your company. Dad passed January 20, 2009. I announced
my resignation to work effective March 15, 2009 and I have never looked
back. I continued working on the book and hired an amazing illustrator by
the name of Chantal Gabriell from Seashine Design who helped to make each and
every faery come to life. I considered going the traditional publisher
route, but I discovered that they could change absolutely everything about the
book. Because the book was so close to my heart, I didn’t want that to
happen, so I decided to self-publish. I received many positive reviews on
the manuscript. Then just one month prior to going to the presses, I had a
Best-Selling Canadian Author agree to review my book. I was so excited,
until I received her response, which was, ‘I cannot review this book. It
is not my cup of tea. It is too Hallmarky. You are not saying
anything new. If you want some really good poetry, read Dennis Lee’s Alligator
Pie.’ I was totally devastated. The inner critic in my mind went
wild with this information asking me, ‘Who do you think you are, really?’ I
finally decided to muster up the courage to go to the library and read Alligator
Pie. I had read it to my brothers when I was younger, but I couldn’t
remember everything that was in it. When I found the book and read the
first poem, I burst into laughter. I realized that this Best-Selling
Canadian author had no idea of what I was trying to say. It ended up that
she gave me the greatest gift that anyone could have given me. Not
everyone is going to like my work, just like not everyone likes the same music,
movies...or books. You have to learn not to take it personally and write
for those that truly understand the message you are trying to convey. If I
had listened to her, I would not have published this book which is now an award
winner many times over and has helped to raise over $20,000 for worthy
causes. Awards won include:
-Winner of the 2011 USA Best Book Books Awards for
Inspirational Poetry
- Award-Winning Finalist
in the 2011 Global e-Book Awards
- Award-Winning Finalist
in the Best Interior Design, Children's Educational and Children's
Mind/Body/Spirit categories of the 2011 International Book Awards
- Nominee for the
Alberta 2010 Best Book of the Year Award for Children by the Book
Publishers of Alberta
- Bronze Medal for cover
design in the 2010 Summit Awards, Artwork by Chantal T. Gabriell,
Seashine Design”
She shared her journey through hardship, “My rock bottom was
dealing with my father’s death. We had kept him at our family home until
his passing, so watching his slow decline was painful because he had always
been such a proud man. When he passed, I wanted the earth to stop
spinning, just for one minute, to acknowledge my pain and loss. But it
didn’t. Everything just kept on moving right along. I had thought I
had really understood when other friends of mine had lost their parents, but I
realized then, that you couldn’t know the full depths of grief until a similar situation
has happened to you. Certain friends I had expected to be there for me,
just plain and simple, were not. Others that I never would have expected
to were there. I ended up finding a grief support group and that was so
incredibly healing. It was really good to know that I was not alone in my
thoughts, feelings and frustrations. It is like you become part of a
secret society that totally understands one another. My dad sends me
plenty of signs from nature and I know that he is one of my angels looking out
for me, but there are times that I would just love to be able to have a chat
with him on this earth plane. He had always been a man of great wisdom and
support and there are times in this business venture that I
would love to be able to bounce things off of him.”
Susanne found out that with hardship comes education,
“The lessons I learned:
1. Don’t wait till later to do
something that you really want to do, because later may never come.
2. Take time to be with your loved
one and be willing to talk about their death with them. They try to be so
strong for everyone else, but deep inside, they need some comfort from you.
3. Don’t assume that people understand your
grief, especially if they have not been through a similar experience. Seek
out a grief support group if it feels like the right thing for you. All
people grieve differently.
4. That many signs are given to us,
if we are willing to watch or listen for them from our loved ones that have
passed.”
She closed with this inspirational quote, “I love
this quote by Walt Disney, ‘All your dreams can come true if you have the
courage to pursue them.’ Please pursue your dreams now, and don't wait
till later.”

I am forever trying to embrace and release, into the universe, positive and uplifting energy. I've already shared that, as of late, I've been a bit low. Perhaps my body is screaming, stop and recover. I came out of last year healing from a rough spell both emotionally and physically after I lost my cat late November. I spent several weeks, in December, hurting from a bronchial virus.
Then, the first week of January, I fell. YIKES.
I still continue to work out and I'm still trying to manage nutritional intake. I'm stretching everyday but I'm sacrificing sleep as my routine changes. I'm working to get my sleep back up to par and to get my meditation back on track. In a good week, I'm meditating daily. In a bad week, I'm lucky to get one session.
So, if you're feeling like you've lost your energy, take a look at the list link in the article for ideas to get it back. There are some unique ones!
If you have any idea's you can add to the energy boosting list, post them for everyone to read!

I’m hopeful that you are all
riding the wave of change and inspiration as you move forward through the close
of January, 2013. But, if you seem to be
dipping a bit into the tranches, as I’ve been feeling, I thought this article
might boost both of our spirits.
It seems like I’ve been
fighting my body and depriving myself of necessary sleep. I really do know
better but with change in routines, sometimes structure seems to crumble a bit
until the ground firms as control is taken back. I’ll get back on track but, in
the meanwhile, a bit of advice about sharing with friends, soothing tea,
healthy stretches and sleep certainly can’t hurt!
Let’s take care of ourselves,
we need our health to live fully and aspire to our dreams.
How are you feeling? Drop me
a note.

continued the interview.
Her
mission, “Through my struggles, it is my goal
in life to help make the world a better place by helping others to understand
that death is a part of life and it is not an ending to who we are. And it is only in our attempts to understand
this experience that we may overcome much of our fears about it. Not many want
to talk about death. But how can we begin to understand it if we don’t? No
amount of knowledge can take away all of the fear of this experience because
our perceptions are limited by the human brain.
Eastern
philosophies idea of reincarnation help to explain the energy imbalances or
lack of fairness in our world; if we can overcome our fears to try and
understand this experience we call death, it might help us in our daily lives
and prepare us for even greater experiences when we do cross dimensions. The word death in our culture is so taboo…and
that, in my opinion, needs to change for our world to become a better place.”
She
talked about what helped her cope, “Significant to my recovery throughout the
struggles that I’ve been through, again, is my connection to our source, God. Having
a minister, priest, shaman, monk, or sage are wonderful mentors in assisting us
to have a closer connection to God. But the real focus must be between us and
our creator on a daily basis, not just when things are going badly in our
lives, but being grateful when the pendulum swings in the other direction. And becoming aware that, by design, there is plenty of help on this journey in each
person’s life. Our deceased loved ones,
our own guides in spirit, and angels galore are a huge benefit bestowed to us
that we don’t always use to our advantage in
any recovery process."
Kent described
her book and writing/publishing process, “My book is a metaphysical memoir
primarily telling a love story that crosses boundaries of time and space. The
book begins telling experiences of my early and young adult life—stories that
relate to the paranormal, or experiences that are believed to lie outside the
normal. The story chronicles the communication with my boyfriend on the other
side who consoles me and his family who are grieving so from the unexpected
loss.
Further,
as our communication continues with more than just him, a higher purpose is
gradually revealed to all that is happening and, aside from this book, is kept
hidden in a time capsule to be opened 55 years later. Spiritual scavenger hunts
to Canada and Europe not only reveal both past and future lives, but also
unveil how we, as human beings, are living in parallel universes or finite
planes of light. Therefore, quantum physics is touched on from a layman’s
perspective to help in understanding what is being theorized in particle
physics today, and may actually be the missing link from what we think of as
the afterlife to the one where we are consciously living as human beings.
Universal Life Strings is
the publisher of my book and an organization that was created to promote the
understanding of death as a part of life and to bring a higher level of
understanding where life and the afterlife meet. It appeals to the spirituality
of every sect. Love Promised: A Future
Life Revealed can be found on Amazon as an ebook and available on my
website at www.UniversalLifeStrings.com as a hardcopy.”
Her advice for others, “For
anyone grieving the loss of a loved one, I would encourage a sincere look
outside of the box into the metaphysical world, if not already there, to
discover that your loved ones are not what some may think of as dead. Knowing
there is a transition to another place, time and dimension is a comforting
thought rather than being laid to rest in the ground six feet under. In fact,
they are anything but resting; however, they are at peace. When Jesus made the statement in the Bible, ‘Let the
dead bury their dead’, in my opinion, he was saying… let them be buried by
those who think they are dead. Yes,
we must properly dispose of the body, the vehicle used while here, but we are
not our physical body, and the spiritual body truly lives on. And, for anyone
who is consciously aware of having had out-of-body experiences, Love Promised outlines specific
resources that can be sought out focusing on this subject alone.”
Her closing words, “I
learned many years ago studying a philosophy of life called Concept-Therapy®,
that all ideas can be placed upon your own triangle of knowledge, i.e. fact,
theory, or fantasy. Regardless of where the reader’s perceptions may begin or
end, I hope the ideas presented in this book, if nothing else, will instill
within the reader the desire to question and ponder the reality of life and
death. For it’s in our searching for
answers that we do find them. Though we
may choose to believe what we have
read or what someone may say; truth comes to us all from within. And because we
are multifaceted beings living in a linear universe, the truth may not be the
same for all.”

I was inspired to tap into the psyche, at a basic level, by my degree I am pursuing in counseling. I've only had 2 weeks of class but I'm already really intrigued by the topic. It seems like I'm going to go through a lot of self and group analysis in my Masters Degree for Mental Health Counseling. I can't wait to learn more about myself and understand why I do the things that I do.
I'm sure my upbringing, development, environment and much, much more plays into all of this. I have so much to learn but I'm happy that I'm truly interested in the task at hand. I believe I've found my calling. And, as the program teaches, I can't help others until I fully understand me (the person coming to the table). It should be an interesting ride!
What are your thoughts about the psyche? Do you feel healthy?
