Mary Anne Britton is a dear friend of mine who I met when I hired her through a temp agency. It breaks my heart to see her struggle in this crazy market. I'm hopeful she will land a great position in the very near future. It is somewhat understandable when you know someone who doesn't put forth real effort and/or milks the system but when circumstances are polar opposites, it doesn't make sense why an employer hasn't stepped up!

Mary Anne offered advice to others who have recently lost their jobs, " First look at all your options; get your financial house in order – if possible pay down bills; as far as purchases learn that even if it was on your “want list” ask yourself if it is on your “need list”. Learn to live much simpler; I have a crock pot that I use to make soups etc so I have learned to live more inexpensively with less food additives. Dial down the temperature and put on a sweatshirt and sign up for all the classes at Michigan Works!

I have faith in our Detroit business' knowing someone will read the article and approach Mary Anne with a purchasing opportunity of a life time! Can you help?

This article is very personal to me. I, like many of my coworkers and friends, have been through this horrible and eye-opening experience. Looking back, it was the one thing that gave me the courage to ignite my passion for writing and drawing and market these skills. It was a blessing in disguise. I thought, while the market is saturated and my odds are low in landing another executive management job, I'll share my efforts and work to build my web business, Lifetime Art Impression. I wouldn't say I'm thriving with sales but I'm starting to feel like things are moving in the right direction which makes me really happy inside. I'm hopeful the market conditions, especially here in Metro Detroit, will open up and we can all let go of our anxieties tied to bills. Although, I must admit, I've learned how to better manage my finances in this crash course of survival. How are you doing in this economic down fall?

As a child I grew up poor (I've mentioned this before) and therefore the only trip I remember was one when I was in about 4th grade and we ventured Up North in Michigan a few hours away, to stay a couple of nights with a Great Uncle and his wife. It was one of the highlights of my childhood. Nothing exotic, in fact, it was quite the opposite but it might as well been as it touched me sincerely. We enjoyed a visit to the House of Flavors ice cream shop where we were able to "win" a pin which said, "I was a pig at the House of Flavors" when we finished our, very large, Sundays that were served in a pig trough! I, of course, had to have help from the table to be able to get the pin, but the experience was priceless. This memento, along with a knitted doll from a great cousin, was my souvenirs from the trip. We didn't have the money to venture out shopping but it didn't matter. I still have the knitted doll today! The message here is to step out of your world for a short time and do not let your financial status or busy schedule get in your way and keep you from creating memories that last a lifetime. Where will you go?

I interviewed Tom with another gentleman from Access Magazine who is also living with a Spinal Cord Injury (SPI). I was overwhelmed by the courage and spirit these 2 men radiate. I learned so much about them and how they, with time, overcame their tragedy and accepted their new lives. They were able to learn to lead completely new lives, transforming themselves into leaders and giving back to the community in the aftermath of horrific injuries. I'm sure I will be interfacing with the Ann Arbor Center for the Independent Living in some way in the future. It is a worthy, non-profit organization that needs our help to continue to do such great work. If you're able to help in any way, please contact Tom Hoatlin to contribute! You're gift will be greatly appreciated.

Does your life feel out of control, continued...

Yesterday when I was interviewed on the Healing a Grieving Heart radio show, I was asked if I found anything in common between the loss I have suffered; loss of my marriage, job, my father and so on. It made me realize the common factor, in all cases, was really out of my control. You might think you can make your marriage work, but you can only control your part, not your partners. You might think you can control your career but sometimes there are circumstances beyond your hard work effort that causes your departure and we all know life isn't everlasting but emotionally, you feel like your parents will always be there for you. In all cases I felt like my world, at least as I knew it, was shattered and this was true. I had to brave through the change and transform myself into a person who is divorced, who is unemployed and who is without a father here on earth. I survived it all and I will continue to survive the next phase of change. I may not like everything that comes my way but I can count on my strength to make the best of it and find the silver-lining as I move forward. How has your loss gifted you?

Keep your inner child alive, continued...

My family was very poor when I was a child. My parents did their best although I felt like we were growing up in the 40's as opposed to the 70's. Of course my childhood set a course that enabled me to be a very passionate and aggressive person. I had a very active imagination when I was young and I spent a lot of time drawing. All it took was a pencil or crayons and some scrap paper; I could look at anything and draw it. I'm sure all of my childhood practice helped me to hone my skills into what they are today. When I sit in front of a blank sheet of paper and before I know it, the empty space comes to life as I create an image filled colors and emotion, I'm actually feeding my inner child. I love the feeling I get as I complete each piece of art. I haven't spent much time, as an adult, drawing but now that I'm making a career of it, I'm excited to give myself permission to play! Have you given yourself permission yet?
