Eco-map, continued...

Example of energy flow:

If you have someone in your life that is important to you, you draw a thick line from you in the center circle to this person’s circle and if it is a give and take relationship then you have arrows pointing both ways. If you are always asking for help but you do not give much support back the arrows would only be pointed towards the inner circle (to you). It is important to include any bad relationships in your life; dotted or fenced lines to show barriers or issues depict these. People can even put a deceased loved one in a circle if he or she still talks to them through prayer or out loud in hopes this person is still around in spirit although this would be an example of using a fenced line to represent a barrier. Another example might be a parent who is absent in your life or maybe it is someone who is incarcerated.

When the map is complete a lot of information can be derived from it, and many times this detail is life altering to the client.

It can highlight the energy vampires in your life; those people whom you continue to give and give without any support ever coming back. It can surface the relationships that you wish to strengthen; those you need to make more time for that you want to nurture. It can also show how isolated you are or how much you interface within your community; outside support and even giving back to the community makes for a better world a better place for us all.

Strongbonds.jss.org.au talks about how an eco-map can show and open or closed boundary in a family or close circle:

"Families who have flexible open boundaries have healthy relationships with people outside the family. They allow individual family members to develop independent relationships whilst maintaining family connections.
Families with closed boundaries have little contact with the outside world and tend to view the world with suspicion. Family members become enmeshed and sometimes depressed as there is no new input to energise relationships and thinking."

If you are feeling lonely or you are struggling with the relationships in your life an eco-map may be a helpful tool to utilize while you ponder the connections and decide if each one is healthy for you or not. Give it a try, what can it hurt?

Silent-suffering, continued...

The topic silent suffering surfaced in correspondence handed out in my group therapy class. This class really does support the concept of relationships. It is amazing what the presence of another or others can do for the psyche. It may feel like you're in this world alone but we are all suffering together and, of course, we are all enjoying the joy of life with each other too.

Silent suffering is self-torture. Give yourself permission to share your story. It might seem like others won't understand but you will be surprised how common your experiences are, both the good and the bad ones.

Take a chance, it is worth the risk.

Leave me a note and let me know what you think, let's make a connection!

Success in love, continued...

I replied to a PR request to write an article about what women really want. In writing this article and submitting it, I realized that, emotionally mature men and women really do want the same thing. We may have different visions but the concepts are equal. I revamped my article about what women want to reflect the needs of both men and women.

I believe for success in love you must come to the table healthy and find a partner who is equally healthy. This doesn't mean you don't have history of failed relationships, it means you've taken ownership of past wrongs and you've learned from these mistakes. Emotionally and physically, you and your partner must be fully present. If one person isn't (they're not fully committed) this will tip the scale off balance. Strive for balance and if it is unattainable, cut your losses and leave. Your health is worth it!

What are you looking for in a partner? Leave a comment.

Loyalty, a feeling of devotion, continued...

I think loyalty is one of my best traits but it is also one of my faults because I usually sacrifice my well being for far to long before I realize, hey, I'm tired of being the door mat and I need to make a change. It is why I stayed in an unhealthy marriage for far to many years. It is why I stayed in unhealthy jobs for to long and it is why I've had people around me who ended up hurting me because I gave them the benefit of the doubt and shouldn't have. The good news is eventually I wised up and today I have healthy people around me.

Please do not miss-interpret my message. Turmoil arises in all relationships at times and we have to decide to overcome it or move on. You'll do what feels right. This is part of life. And, at times, you'll need to give more than you will receive and this is okay too. Just be sure this cycle balances out in the long run and if it doesn't, cut the string and move on!

What are your feelings regarding loyalty? Have I hit a nerve; share with me!

Cheating doesn't benefit anyone, continued...

Okay, I have no tolerance for an adult who cheats. If you are cheating, GROW UP and consider the harm you are promoting!!! If you're unhappy in your relationship, END IT! It is the right thing to do.

For most of my career I was hit on by married men. I gave them all the same response, "Take the attention you're giving me and go home and focus it towards your wife where it belongs."

I have very little faith in both men and women considering I've known both who have actively cheated. I'm not protesting to be perfect as I too, in my teen years, didn't take commitment seriously but I did grow up. I respect the person I'm devoted to and I respect myself enough to maintain my commitment. What are your thoughts about this topic? Who is more unfaithful, men or women?

Holidays rekindle relationships, continued...

I feel so blessed with such good people in my life. I still see friends from school and from everywhere I have worked. It seems like I'm finding more and more sincere people around me as I move through my life. Although, at the end of each year I end up feeling bad thinking about how little time I spend with my older friends. I'm going to make a better effort to touch base more. The older I get the more I realize the value of this companionship. I did a better job this year using the Linkedin and Facebook forums but I need to venture my efforts out of the virtual world to make physical connections with everyone. More lunches, dinners, movies and visits will be prioritized in 2010 for me. It sounds like a lot of fun, doesn't it?
