My blog, Inspirations by Kathryn J. Raths includes posts from 2009 to 2016 that were an extension of my Healthy Living Examiner column which has been closed. However, the articles are being revamped as an extension of Kathryn J. Raths.com, which is in the making! The image is a self-portrait I drew in oil pastels; the woods gift me a deep connection with nature and safety!

Sally Monahan and I connected on Facebook by sharing the common interest of promoting the well being of our four-legged friends. She volunteers at the Dallas-Fort Worth Dachshund Rescue Foundation. She connected me with Kathleen Coleman who, if you read the article, is a real life angel. Kathleen devotes her efforts towards rescuing Dachshunds.
I'm so grateful for people like Sally and Kathleen. They advocate on behalf of our little fury companions and work to better their world and ours!
What can you do to help with this very worthy cause? Contact the rescue foundation if you're able to adopt and/or donate. Anything is helpful and appreciated!

Loyalty, a feeling of devotion, continued...

I think loyalty is one of my best traits but it is also one of my faults because I usually sacrifice my well being for far to long before I realize, hey, I'm tired of being the door mat and I need to make a change. It is why I stayed in an unhealthy marriage for far to many years. It is why I stayed in unhealthy jobs for to long and it is why I've had people around me who ended up hurting me because I gave them the benefit of the doubt and shouldn't have. The good news is eventually I wised up and today I have healthy people around me.
Please do not miss-interpret my message. Turmoil arises in all relationships at times and we have to decide to overcome it or move on. You'll do what feels right. This is part of life. And, at times, you'll need to give more than you will receive and this is okay too. Just be sure this cycle balances out in the long run and if it doesn't, cut the string and move on!
What are your feelings regarding loyalty? Have I hit a nerve; share with me!

Maintain a healthy brain as you age, continued...

I learned a lot from my research for this article. I feel like my life is much more paced these days in comparison to my previous executive life-style. I used to multi-task and I seemed so on top of things back then. I'm only talking about 2 or 3 years ago. Today I feel more scattered with less pressure on me. Could I have aged that much moving from my thirties to my forties?
I'm thankful for the "promoting healthy brain" foods listed in the article. I'm sure I am going to make an effort to fill my diet with these nutrients.
What are you doing to keep yourself and your brain healthy?

Bob Tarte is a Michigan writer, continued...

You can tell Bob enjoys nature and its inhabitants based on his description of where he lives, "We live on the edge of a shoe-sucking swamp near the West Michigan village of Lowell. When we're not fending off mosquitoes during temperate months we're chipping ice out of plastic wading pools in the frigid winter."
He truly loves his pets, all 53 of them although Bob noted his cats are the most mischievous! Being a cat lover myself, I can certainly understand this statement. They are little characters. I couldn't imagine having birds and cats as pets; it must keep him pretty busy just making sure the cats aren't sizing up the birds for a snack!
It amazes me how we can mentor, love and teach one another to live together in harmony even when they are predators of each other!
Do you have any pets who are in each other's food chain? If so, share your story with me!

Ground Yourself, continued...

I drew this self portrait oil pastel as a project for Safehouse Center in Ann Arbor Michigan. I'm hopeful the image will be used on their 2011 calendar to help them raise money. It is my first self portrait and I must say, when I look at it, it grounds me; I love the peaceful feeling it gifts me. I'm a spiritual person and I've always used nature to calm me. A quick walk, a view of geese flying overhead or a deer in the field all help uplift my spirit.
I'm hopeful the image will touch others in a similar way. It is so important to take breaks from stress and allow yourself to be present and take in peaceful moments to offset havoc. Can you share things you utilize to help ground you?

I lost my job late 2008 and, at that time, I took my first shot at tightening my financial belt. Luckily, I wasn't someone who lived well beyond my means to start with so I was in better shape than most. I also had invested money and had a savings that helped me to downsize debt immediately!
I was amazed how many debtors did work with me. I not only called my credit card companies (I closed most because they didn't have balances) but I also called my dish and phone suppliers. I told them I had lost my job and because of this I was going to quote out their service. I mentioned that I didn't want to change companies but I needed to save money where I could. AT&T gave me a $10 credit for the next 12 months to stay with them and I was happy to do so. Dish Network discounted my current package to the package price below it without changing my service. Just between the 2, I saved $276 annually and I was happy I had made the calls. I figured, it didn't hurt to try and I didn't know the people on the other side of the phone so I could "suck it up" and make the request!
It isn't easy to walk away from something you're used to buying but when you face reality, it is a necessary action to enforce "living within your means".
Do you have any cost saving tips that you were able to implement? If so, can you share them so others can benefit from your discovery?
